Suffice to say it's NASCAR's way of scoring/ranking the race teams at the Sprint Cup level. Same idea as NHL scoring toward the Stanley Cup. Here's the url address (I haven't figured out how to use "tags" yet) of the NASCAR 2008 Owner Driver Standings (hey, you asked!):
If you scroll to the bottom of that page, you'll see an overview of the owner points system. The top 35 owners automatically qualify for a race; the remaining 8 spots in the starting grid are filled by teams that have to race into the field ... and sometimes don't make it. A young team's first priority is to break into the top 35 so they will be guaranteed a starting spot no matter how fast they run during qualifying.
